History & Background

Barbara performs jazz standards, bebop, ballads, blues, soul, pop and smooth Jazz. Born in Napier with both parents playing instruments she was always around music. Her mother played piano by ear and her father played banjo, piano accordion and harmonica. Her grandmother was the band leader for a 20 piece piano accordion band. Her parents operated one of the first Cabaret businesses in New Zealand called “The Aztec Lounge” Napier, well known as the “Top Hat”. Many artist’s nationally and internationally performed there including Ray Woolf, Ray Columbus, Cleo Laine, Millie Small, Four Jacks and a Jill, The Pedlars, The Chicks, and many others.

In the 1990s she formed Jass Jazz Band and performed at the Palmerston North Jazz Festival, Tauranga Jazz Festival, wineries, cafes and private functions. Also formed a band called “Sit Back” with Carry Baxter ( Piano), Steve Corbitt ( Guitar), Phillip Cook (Drums).

Training: Studied with Vocal coach Per Bristow, USA,  Jeannie Deva (The Deva Method Complete Training) USA, Speech Level Singing with tutors from USA ( Jeffrey Skousen & Dave Stroud) & (Stuart Clarke) NZ.  Her influences include such legendary names as Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Julie London, Billie Holiday, Joni Mitchell, Patti Austin, Nancy Wilson, Oleta Adams, George Benson, Al Jarreau, Jon Hendricks, Earth Wind and Fire, Santana. Recent artists: Stacey Kent, The Tierney Sutton Band, Jane Monheit, Kurt Elling,  and Eva Cassidy.

ROSS HALLIDAY

(guitarist and vocalist) Ross was a member of crosswinds, the renowned Taranaki band of the 70’s, and travelled with that band in NZ for two years before attending the Berkley College of Music in Boston, USA.
He then pursued a musical career in Boston, London, and Sydney, performing with rock, pop and jazz bands during the early eighties. He has returned to New Zealand recently and now performs in Taranaki and throughout the country. He is also teaching privately and at local High Schools.
